Determining how many calories your body needs to achieve your health or fitness goals is the first essential step to weight loss or muscle gain.
Maybe you’ve calculated this before by inputting your age, weight, height, gender, and activity level into an equation to estimate your daily caloric needs. If you’ve ever used a calorie counting app, you certainly have.
The problem with equations is that they are generalized to mass populations and are only 70% accurate at best. This can result in consumption of up to 1000 calories more or less per day than you actually need!
Indirect calorimetry is the most accurate and gold-standard way to determine your daily caloric needs. It measures the amount of carbon dioxide you produce relative to the amount of oxygen you inhale with each breath – aka Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER). We can then calculate your resting metabolic rate (RMR) to the exact amount of calories that your body burns at rest.
